Where It All Began

Since I can remember, I've always had trouble handling my hair the right way. I was born with very curly lightweight hair, and no one in my family ever had curly hair, so no one knew how to manage it quite right. My mum used to break combs trying to brush my hair and braid it for school, and don't get me started on my horrific afro phase.

My Damaging Phase

I always thought that my natural hair was my worst quality. I was taught not to like my frizzy curly hair, and instead of trying to search for ways to make it healthier and stronger, I made it a hundred times worst by applying straightening treatments and ironing it daily. Extensive damage does not even cover what happened to my hair, and I was left with terrible split ends, burnt hair, a lot of hair falling out constantly, and extremely dry hair follicles.

Self Realization

I was never happy with how my hair looked, but I never knew what the alternative would look like until I started following curly bloggers on instagram. Seeing their progress and how their hair completely transformed from something beyond repair to shiny bouncy curls was astonishing to me. I started googling everything and anything about curly hair, watched plenty of hair bloggers reviewing products, tried way too many strengthening masques and treatments, researched all styling methods possible, and finally took the step to try and revive any curls I had left.

A Fresh Start

The first step I took was cutting off all that damaged hair that was full of breakages, split ends, and treatment residue. I had no idea that the process of reviving my curly hair would take this long. The journey was definitely not easy and it needed a lot of commitment and dedication in order to reach the point I've reached now. I started using shampoos and conditioners that were all natural and do not contain any parabens or sulphates. Then tried endless deep conditioners to strengthen my hair and define my curls. After that came the styling experimentation where I tried countless products to see which ones suited my hair best.

Final Product

After a whole year of experimentation, I finally reached a presentable outcome that I was super happy with. I started this process 4 years ago, and I'm proud to say that I'm extremely satisfied with my hair now and figuring out how I can properly take care of it without causing too much damage.

Thanks for sharing your journey towards self-love. I did the opposite--destroyed my hair with perms in pursuit of curls. Needless to say, I learned to accept my straight hair decades ago, but I can't help but be jealous of your wonderful curls. :-)
